the Baker Associates approach

The key to engaging communities and other stakeholder groups in town planning is the creative use of participatory techniques to develop a shared vision for the future.

Baker Associates uses innovative approaches to participation, which are particularly successful in reaching groups who are usually cut off from the planning process. Successful participation offers much more than the fulfillment of a statutory requirement. It also taps into invaluable local knowledge, makes links on the ground, informs the way issues are addressed and builds local support for plan-making or project development.

who we work with

  • local authorities - to secure effective involvement in plan-making or regeneration
  • local communities - to shape and influence changes in their local area
  • project promoters - to gain an understanding of local views

our work

Our approach responds to the individual needs of clients. Our work in this area includes:

  • Taunton Deane Borough Council - process design and event facilitation for ‘Talking Tomorrow’s Taunton’ – a joint approach to participation for the Local Development Framework and Community Strategy (view the 'Talking Tomorrow's Taunon Deane' video)
  • Mendip District Council - design of, and running, the ‘issues and options stage’ consultation for the Core Strategy as part of a wider contract to take forward the Local Development Framework
  • Torridge District Council - running community exhibitions as part of the DAWN Regeneration Framework, (funded by the Market and Coastal Towns Initiative)
  • Designing and running the consultation and engagement programme for a 10,500 home urban extension on the edge of Bristol
  • Working with Nailsea Town Council to understake consultation to inform their parish Plan. The consultation included a postal questionnaire with one in three housholds within the town completing responses.    nailsea
